How to use antiscalant HEDP
HEDP (1-Hydroxy Ethylidene-1,1-Diphosphonic Acid) is a widely used antiscalant and corrosion inhibitor that is particularly effective in preventing the formation of scales in industrial water systems. It works by binding to metal ions such as calcium, magnesium, iron, and other divalent metal ions, thus preventing the formation of mineral scales like calcium carbonate, calcium sulfate, and barium sulfate. It is commonly used in water treatment, cooling systems, boilers, and oilfield operations.
Here’s a guide on how to use HEDP as an antiscalant in various applications:
1. Cooling Water Systems
In cooling towers and heat exchangers, where mineral scale can rapidly form due to the evaporation of water, HEDP is used to prevent scale formation and to enhance the efficiency of heat transfer.
Dosage:
The typical dosage of HEDP in cooling water systems ranges from 1 to 10 mg/L depending on the hardness of the water and the specific scaling potential.
In areas with high calcium or magnesium content in the water (hard water), a higher dosage may be required.
Application:
Pre-mix: HEDP is often diluted in water before being added to the system. Prepare a dilution of 1-2% HEDP solution.
Continuous Feed: HEDP can be fed continuously into the system using a dosage pump or injection system. The chemical should be added at a point where it is well mixed into the flow of water to ensure uniform distribution.
Control Dosage: Regular testing of the water's hardness levels and the scaling tendencies should be performed to adjust the dosage of HEDP as needed.
2. Boiler Water Treatment
In boilers, scale formation can reduce efficiency and even cause damage to the system. HEDP helps to prevent the precipitation of calcium salts and other minerals that can accumulate on boiler tubes and heating surfaces.
Dosage:
Typical dosage is in the range of 5 to 50 ppm (parts per million) depending on the hardness of the feedwater and the operating conditions.
For high-pressure boilers, a lower dosage may be sufficient, while for low-pressure
